Riccardo Montolivo praised Milan’s team spirit and Kaka’s performance, but rued missed chances against Barcelona.

“It was a bit like last season, as we allowed Barcelona possession and went on the counter-attack. We had two or three great chances to really hurt them, but it didn’t go well,” he said of the 1-1 Champions League draw.

“It’s a shame, as we had the opportunities to win this match and we really wanted to.”

Coach Massimiliano Allegri changed tactics, adopting a front three without a recognised centre-forward.

“If we play as a team, then we can challenge anyone. I think tonight we had the right attitude, as tactics and shapes can only count for so much without team spirit.

“Kaka had a great performance. He went on counters, provided some wonderful passes and he obviously can’t be 100 per cent yet, but he was great tonight.”
