Cesare Prandelli hopes his experimental Italy can “learn” the lessons of their 2-2 draw in Denmark last night.

The Azzurri had taken the lead through Dani Osvaldo, went 2-1 down to a Nicklas Bendtner brace of headers and Alberto Aquilani snatched a point in stoppages.

“We played a very good first half and conceded at the last second,” said the Coach in his Press conference.

“We suffered for the first 20-25 minutes of the second half, practically not playing at all and only looking for long balls. Paradoxically we only started playing again when 2-1 down.

“I am absolutely not disappointed, as I knew Denmark needed a victory and had quality. This team has character and pride, so when we play ball to feet then we play good football.

“Denmark played above and beyond their capabilities because they needed the victory for qualification. We were forced to play the long ball, couldn’t keep it in the other half and therefore were pegged back. Denmark had a lot of corners and that helped them make the most of their characteristics.

“We started playing again after going 2-1 down and that changed the game. If this team does not play its own football, it suffers. We have to learn that.”

Of the players tested out in this World Cup qualifier, Osvaldo and Thiago Motta impressed the most.

“Osvaldo scored a great goal and gave an excellent performance. We are happy, as when a player trains in a relaxed manner then he can fulfil his potential.

“Thiago Motta was not a surprise either and it’s wonderful to know these players care so much about the jersey.”
