The Roma captain turned 37 on Friday and spoke to Roma Channel and Sky Sport Italia to celebrate his big day.

“I thank everyone for their affection and birthday wishes. The fans are my strength to do great things for Roma and will help me continue to honour the jersey.

“I’ve celebrated many birthdays here. It is a pleasure to share this day with my teammates, who are like a second family for me. We had a nice meal, but the mind is already on the game with Bologna.

“Roma hadn’t been on top of the table for such a long time that we need to stay on the right track, though there’s a very long way to go.”

Daniele De Rossi joked his ‘Future Captain’ nickname will last forever because Totti shows no signs of giving up the armband.

“I have a special rapport with Daniele. On the one hand I hope he can become Roma captain as soon as possible, but on the other that it’s as late as possible because that would mean I’d no longer be able to play.”

Happy birthday wishes came in from all corners, except for one. When asked whether he wanted to join the chorus, Lazio President Claudio Lotito declined.

“I wish a happy birthday to my own players, otherwise I’d have to congratulate every member of all the teams.”
