Miroslav Klose became Germany’s all-time top scorer last night, but the Lazio striker insists “Gerd Muller was stronger.”

The veteran forward netted his 68th career goal for his country in last night’s World Cup qualifier against Austria, matching Muller’s tally.

“Thomas Muller is right when he says 50 per cent of this goal was down to him, as he put in a great assist.

“Another 25 per cent of the credit goes to the Austrian defender who deflected it on to me. I will take the remaining 25 per cent,” Klose told the Corriere dello Sport.

“As for Gerd Muller, he was stronger than me. He only needed half my caps to notch up 68 goals.”

Muller reached this target in 62 games, whereas Klose won his 127th cap last night.
