The former Juventus man signed for Sunderland this summer after impressing at the Confederations Cup.
But the 28-year-old’s representative has conceded that he attempted to convince the Partenopei to sign the Italy international.
“I proposed Giaccherini to Napoli,” Furio Valcareggi told Radio Kiss Kiss. “But [sporting director Riccardo] Bigon refused.
“All this dates back to before he signed for Juventus [from Siena].
“Emanuele decided to go to Juve, and everything changed.”
