Sassuolo defender Francesco Acerbi is awaiting test results after emergency surgery to remove a testicular tumour.

The statement from the club referring to Wednesday’s operation did not state whether the tumour was benign or cancerous.

It has emerged the tumour was only discovered during a routine medical for the 25-year-old’s transfer to Sassuolo.

Doctors discovered anomalies in his blood tests and decided to investigate further, finding the tumour and recommending emergency surgery to remove it.

The defender was released from hospital the next day, so is now resting and waiting for doctors to advise him on the next step.

Sassuolo’s statement noted staff will need a few days to evaluate the situation and suggest when he could return to football.

Acerbi joined Sassuolo on loan this month after spells at Milan and Chievo, who co-own the player with Genoa.
