The Milan forward has struggled for form and was not expected to start this evening despite an injury crisis.

He played the entire 120 minutes of Italy’s Confederations Cup third place play-off with Uruguay and converted successfully in the shoot-out victory.

“Finally… even if it was in a penalty shoot-out…. at least it went in!” wrote the 20-year-old on Twitter.

“Immense satisfaction and compliments for everyone. Great character and great heart!! We are third!”

His Milan teammate Mario Balotelli was watching in Italy and also tweeted during the game.

“GIGI BUFFON! Superman! 🙂 yes! Great lads!” he wrote.
