Alessandro Diamanti insisted he “felt it would be a goal” as soon as he stepped up for his free kick against Uruguay.

“In all honesty, when I put the ball down I felt it would be a goal, I hadn’t managed to score for Italy with a free kick before, so I’m happy it was today.”

The Bologna star thought he had netted two in the 2-2 draw with Uruguay, but FIFA awarded the opener to Davide Astori after he toe-poked the Diamanti free kick over the line.

Curiously, that goal was assigned to Astori using goal-line technology, which until now had not been tested at the tournament.

“I don’t mind who scored, so long as it went over the line and counts for Italy. We wanted third place with all our strength today, though this squad deserved to be playing the Final at the Maracanà.”
