Mexico manager Jose Manuel De La Torre is confident about facing Italy on Sunday. “We know how to beat the big teams.”

El Tri begin their Confederations Cup campaign at 20.00 UK time (19.00 GMT) against the Azzurri in Rio de Janeiro’s legendary Maracanà.

“We studied our opponents and will try to control Andrea Pirlo. We are not in awe of the Azzurri. We know how to beat the big teams,” said the Coach.

“Italy play in a more attacking manner compared to the past, but they still defend very well. We’ll see if we can make the most of the spaces, but we won’t change our approach for this game.”

The last time Mexico played Italy was in Brussels in June 2010, earning a shock 2-1 victory. It remains their only victory against the Azzurri along with four 1-1 draws and six defeats.

“Mexico are in good shape. It’s true we are struggling in the World Cup qualifiers, but we have no pressure in the Confederations Cup and should therefore play with more freedom.

“It is important for the players to enjoy themselves on the field so they can be more effective. Say anything you want about us, for we know we’ll be judged on results. We must not allow ourselves to be influenced by outside criticism.

“Let us celebrate, as playing at the Maracanà is a dream come true.”
