“He is on loan here, but we have the right to keep him,” sporting director Carlo Osti noted. “If he wants to stay and if Catania are wiling to renegotiate the fee then he could stay with us.”

It is believed that the two clubs agreed a €6m buy-out clause for the 29-year-old last summer.

The Argentine has had an injury-plagued campaign which has limited him to just 13 appearances in the top-flight.

The former Barcelona man, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Milan, has grabbed four goals.

Doria are expected to sell young striker Mauro Icardi in the summer given that Inter are very keen on his signature.
