Insigne surprised by headed goal

Lorenzo Insigne admits even he was surprised to score with a header in Italy’s Under-21 victory over Russia.

The pint-sized Napoli striker nodded in to complete the 2-0 friendly win on Friday evening.

“It is strange for someone like me to score with a header,” he grinned to the media.

“I am pleased to have finished off a wonderful move created by Alberto Paloschi and Riccardo Saponara.”

The Azzurrini continue their preparations for the European Under-21 Championships in June, although some players will be torn between that tournament and the Confederations Cup.

“We are certainly not going to the Euros in Israel for a vacation. We’ll give everything we’ve got to win the trophy.

“I’m pleased that players like Marco Verratti and Stephan El Shaarawy are doing so well in the senior Italy side.

“Anyone who returns to the Under-21 team for the Euros will be welcomed with open arms and can certainly give us a big helping hand.”
