The Argentine is set to be sidelined for at least six months, possibly as long as nine, which has raised doubts about whether the almost 34-year-old will ever return.

“I don’t think that this is the last of Milito,” the former Napoli player told Calcio News 24. “It is rash to say that.

“At the age of 35 I suffered a really serious knee injury, but I was able to recover in the space of three months.

“I’m no wizard, so I’m proof that it can be done. The determination of the player will now be very important – but he won’t lack motivation.

“These are difficult moments, that is for sure, and I wish Diego the best because he is a great player and Inter need him.”
