Lazio President Claudio Lotito celebrates second place and outlines their transfer strategy for January, including Mauro Zarate.

“We are certainly pretty satisfied, but the best is yet to come,” smiled the patron after their 1-0 victory away to Sampdoria.

“This squad has the potential to challenge everyone and just needs to grow in terms of mentality. We played like a great team on Saturday, while in other occasions we did not.

“If after the Christmas break the side continues to play like it did here, then without underestimating any opponent I say we could do very well.

“If there is the opportunity to make some investments in January, then I will not be unprepared, but first we must cut down the squad. There are players here who haven’t got much space.”

Francelino Matuzalem has already moved to Genoa, while Il Messaggero newspaper claims Lotito is desperate to add Zarate to the package.

Zarate is frozen out following a row with Coach Vladimir Petkovic and his refusal to sit on the bench. It’s believed Lazio are offering the Argentine striker to Genoa on loan with an option to buy at the end of the season.

It was even reported that Lotito was in the stands at Marassi during the Sampdoria game trying to phone Genoa President Enrico Preziosi, but kept getting put through to voicemail.
