Zdenek Zeman praised Fiorentina as the ideal opponents after Roma’s 4-2 victory. “They play and allow their opponents to play, so we took advantage.”
The Stadio Olimpico crowd was given a six-goal thriller with end-to-end enjoyment for the whole 90 minutes.
“It was a good performance against a good Fiorentina side, as they play and allow their opponents to play. If teams let us play, then we take advantage,” said the Coach.
“We have now had four consecutive victories, but Roma always created plenty of chances. Now we are improving in terms of winning back possession. If you don’t have the ball, then you must go looking for it.
“It also becomes easier if we play with three strikers who help out in midfield. We have been trying to play this way since the start. There were a few mistakes at the back again tonight, as the second goal was avoidable.
“My tactics need effort and motivation, so tonight the team proved it really wanted to play good football. In order to win you have to do something beyond the norm.”
Zeman raised eyebrows by leaving Daniele De Rossi on the bench in favour of Panagiotis Tachtsidis despite returning from a three-match ban.
“Who was more convincing? It’s difficult to evaluate, as Tachtsidis scored a goal and put in a good performance, even if he misplaced a few passes. De Rossi came on when we were already 3-2 up and was meant to protect the defence. Those are his characteristics.
“I always said I have a squad where anyone can play. There’s bound to be controversy whatever I decide, but I have to make my choices. When I lose, then you can say they were the wrong choices.
“I am well aware nobody is happy when they don’t get to play, but De Rossi is a professional and has already experienced situations like this.
“Osvaldo was on the bench because he still has a few fitness problems, but I do want to use him alongside Mattia Destro at some point.
“I have said since the start that Roma are competitive and can challenge anyone. We had proved that with our performances and recently also with results. We only played badly against Juventus and part of the Lazio game.
“Are we targeting first place? I want to stay up there and catch up those in front of us. There are still quite a few and we’ll try to get them, one by one.”
