Federico Balzaretti has defended Roma teammate Daniele De Rossi after he was dismissed in the 3-2 loss to Lazio.

“We’re all close to Daniele,” the defender told Sky Sport Italia. “That’s also because he shouldn’t be the scapegoat. We all made mistakes.

“The defeat was not as a direct result of Daniele’s sending off.”

De Rossi has had a problematic campaign to date. He’s not being used in a central midfield position by boss Zdenek Zeman and there is talk that he could be sold by the capital outfit.

“A lot of things are being said about De Rossi, but he is someone who always works very hard,” the former Palermo man continued.

“He’s really happy at Roma, he’s signed a new contract here and I think he wants to stay. We’re all right by him, he’s one of our leaders.”

Another consequence of the player’s red card on Sunday was his omission from the Italy squad for breaking Cesare Prandelli’s code of conduct.

“I don’t know whether his exclusion is right or wrong,” the full-back added. “There is this code and the Coach made his decision.”
