Italy and Liverpool striker Fabio Borini will be out for three months and requires surgery on a broken foot.
The forward sustained the problem during Liverpool’s match with Manchester United, but aggravated it while training with the Under-21 side ahead of the European Championship play-off against Sweden.
Borini returned to Liverpool and the medical team have decided the 21-year-old must go under the knife.
The official club website noted “typically an injury of this nature requires a three-month rehabilitation period.”
Borini has played for the senior Italy squad, but for the most part is an Under-21 international.
