Christian Abbiati has cooled the enthusiasm about his heroics for Milan on Wednesday. “If I’m still here at this club then there must be a reason…”

The Diavolo got their Champions League campaign back on track last night with a 3-2 win at Zenit St Petersburg.

And Abbiati was one of the key protagonists thanks to a string of fine saves which denied Luciano Spalletti’s side.

“My second half stops were important in terms of how the game ended,” he stated. “I was happy and that was why I celebrated like I did.

“But I don’t read the papers whether I’m playing bad or whether I’m playing well. If I’ve been with the club for as long as I have there must be some reason why…”

The 35-year-old, who joined the San Siro giants in 1998, also congratulated his teammates for their efforts in Russia.

“Everyone did well as we played as a team. It’s tough to win away from home in the Champions League and we did it.

“It was important to get a result here and that’s what we did.”
