Newcastle full-back Davide Santon has sent Italy boss Cesare Prandelli a clear message. “Don’t forget about me!”
The Under-21 captain has won seven caps at full international level, but he hasn’t been a regular fixture under Prandelli.
However, after a return to form with Newcastle in the Premiership, Santon is hoping to get back into the set-up for World Cup 2014 qualifying.
“I never lost hope of being selected for Italy, not even in the most difficult moments,” he told Extra Time.
“It seemed like utopia a year ago, but now it is not impossible. I’ll just say one thing to the Coach – don’t forget about me! I’m here too.”
Santon was given his Azzurri debut by Marcello Lippi in 2009. He’s played two games under Prandelli, the last a March 2011 friendly win in Ukraine.
