Palermo’s axe-happy President Maurizio Zamparini thinks Coaches are too expensive. “I would shoot myself if I work out how much I’ve paid out!”

Zamparini has a reputation for hiring and firing which means he’d had to dig deeper than other club owners in recent times.

“How much have I spent on Coaches? Don’t make me do that calculation otherwise I’ll shoot myself,” he stated.

“I can’t tell you, but I’ve spent a lot. €10m? Perhaps even more. But the thing that hurts me the most is that a worker doesn’t earn €1m in a lifetime. Coaches should earn a lot less, a lot less.

“I don’t know what the right price would be for a Coach. It’s a complex issue as it doesn’t just include the Italian economy, but the worldwide one.”

Zamparini dismissed Giuseppe Sannino last week and he’s replaced him with former Genoa and Inter boss Gian Piero Gasperini.

“I’ve paid Gasperini half of what he asked for last year and he’ll be handed a €300,000 bonus if we stay up.”

It is understood that the 3-4-3 tactician has been handed a €700,000 deal – but there is talk of a sack clause which would see him financially rewarded for being dismissed.

“He told me that he didn’t trust me and asked what would happen if he was fired before we were mathematically safe. I then told him to consider that €300,000 bonus as severance pay,” Zampa explained.
