Luca Toni had a special dedication for his first goal since returning to Fiorentina. “To those who are here and those who have gone.”

The 35-year-old left the Stadio Franchi in 2007 to travel around Europe and Dubai, but scored just seconds into his comeback in the 2-0 win over Catania.

“I can’t believe it. Not even in my wildest dreams did I expect that,” smiled Toni.

“I am happy in Florence and the people love me. I’m so pleased, as the love of the fans fills me far more than many other trophies.

“I want to play and I want to play for this city. Stevan Jovetic is wonderful, as he wanted to give me the captain’s armband, but it was only right that he keep hold of it.

“I dedicate this goal to everyone who stayed close to me during these difficult months. I dedicate it to those who are here and those who have gone.”

These have been tough times for Toni, whose first child was stillborn in June.
