Alessandro Diamanti reveals what he was thinking when scoring the decisive spot-kick for Italy against England.

“I didn’t expect it, but always believed and this was absolutely a deserved victory. The penalties did justice," he said after the 4-2 shoot-out win.

“In all honesty, not much went through my mind. I just thought I’d score and then go to see Gigi (Buffon), who told me to hit it fairly wide.”

The Bologna midfielder came off the bench to replace a tired Antonio Cassano and proved crucial.

“We have to be ready for whenever the Coach calls us, as we are all important.

“It was a great performance from the first to the last minute, a battle that we controlled from the start.”
