Ezequiel Schelotto has admitted that he was surprised to see his name in Italy’s 32-man preliminary squad for Euro 2012.
The Atalanta player has been included in the party despite never previously playing for Italy or even being selected by Cesare Prandelli.
“I got home from Turin [after the loss at Juventus] and I didn’t believe it,” the wide-player stated. “I’ll never forgot that day.
“I started the season with two objectives – to play well and ensure Atalanta survived. Once I achieved those ambitions I then started to dream…”
The 22-year-old, born in Buenos Aires, has spoken of his desire to play for the Azzurri ever since he was part of the Italian Under-21 set-up.
“I chose the Italy shirt and not the Argentine one,” stated the former Cesena player. “I made that decision because of the way I’ve always been treated over here in Italy.
“However, now I have to demonstrate to Prandelli that I deserve to be in the squad.”
Prandelli will have to cut nine players from the party before naming his final 23 for Poland and Ukraine.
