Luis Enrique complained of playing “water polo” on a flooded pitch, but admits he “must accept criticism when results don’t arrive” for Roma.

The Giallorossi had their last chance to stay in the hunt for a Champions League spot, but were held to a 0-0 draw at Chievo under the driving rain.

“This was not a football match and if anything seemed more like water polo,” said the Spanish Coach.

“Both teams did all that was possible to win, but we couldn’t do any more on this surface. Miralem Pjanic is a great player, but he had a few fitness problems and playing him on this turf would’ve been a big risk.

“I have no particular regrets about this season. We know that we were inconsistent with ups and downs, but I don’t think it’s fair to discuss that right now.

“We always took it one game at a time and always stayed close to certain positions, but we got a few games wrong and we always admitted that.

“We went close to securing a Champions League spot, but did not manage it. Something was certainly missing. We must improve in defence and be more determined.”

Luis Enrique was asked whether he had felt too much stress in his debut Serie A season.

“It was not a very happy year. I don’t know what will happen in future, but I know that I must accept criticism when the results don’t come.”
